One Hundred Good Women Holiday Drive Be on the lookout for our Annual Holiday Drive wish lists ....in your inbox soon! Hope you attended the inaugural Resource Sharing Open House sponsored by One Hundred Good Women a nd Women Speak in September. Individuals and organizations gathered to display and share projects promoting a sense of community in the hope of facilitating dialog and fostering empowerment in our community. This event was free to all. There was an energy and enthusiasm as well as grand food and fun! Thanks to all of the participants! A special thanks to Victoria Cagan and the entire Women Speak committee for organizing this event. New Website Feature! We are going to try and send One Hundred Good Women members an announcement or reminder each month (roughly...) of a community service or community need. We will also spotlight this community need on the website. Click on our new Spotlight Need link (in the black border on the left, under Upcoming Events) to check out this month's community need! RSVP Involvement Opportunity! The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is launching a national campaign calling citizens to service. The “Get Involved” campaign challenges retirees to “lead, inspire, and change the world … again.” RSVP of Shawnee and Douglas Counties and the Corporation for National and Community Service have joined together to issue a call to service to boomers, kick-starting what could be the greatest generational movement in American history. In Douglas County, there are more than 10,000 baby boomers, but more importantly, there is a pressing need for volunteers to serve as leaders in our community. RSVP extends and invitation to get involved and confront the challenges faced within our community using your skills, knowledge, and experience through volunteering. Find out more about RSVP. Did you know? ....One Hundred Good Women will now accept your donated credit card reward certificates or un-used gift cards! We keep them on hand for folks and families in need. Its another great way to help those in our community! Contact Jennie Washburn or call, 841-0200. Don't forget our local food banks need your support! Check out our current Requests for pantries in our area. Knit for Peace! Would you like to work for peace, one stitch at a time? Join Lawrence knitters and crocheters who are knitting afghans, socks, mittens, hats or vests for the children and families of Afghanistan. Afghans for Afghans collects the knitted gifts and sends them to be distributed directly to Afghan women and children. The next deadline is coming up soon--around Mother's Day. Go toafghansforAfghans.org for pattern directions and instructions and designs to avoid (no images). Ann Kuckelman Cobb has offered to collect and send for the Lawrence group. Grocery / Gas Cars to get Mom through Single Mom, is re-building her life in a variety of ways with help from, Bert Nash, etc. She recently had a job interview - but she has a late water bill and they will only hold it until the 12th. She has a bit of grocery and gas money that she's holding back, and if she had some relief in that area she could throw that money toward keeping the water on. It's a pretty dire situation due to the kids and the housing assistance. The bill is $209 and her helpers are hoping that her grocery fund will cover it. If a few grocery/gas cards could be donated, it would help her make it through November, and definitely see light at the end of the tunnel. If you are able to help, please take the cards to Hedges Insurance, 1035 Vermont, and Melissa or Linda will be glad to receive them. Grocery / Gas Cars to get Teacher through This request is for one of our teachers who is in her first year and struggling as a single mom with three children and no other family support. She went to the food pantry and got a few things, but has nothing to go with it. She needs grocery cards big time and a gas card or two. Currently she is virtually out of food and has no funds until the next payday on the 20th. If you are able to help, please take the cards to Hedges Insurance, 1035 Vermont, and Melissa or Linda will be glad to receive them. Doctoral Student from Zimbabwe needs Grocery / Gift Cards We have a doctoral student from Zimbabwe, trying to finish her degree, who is having significant financial difficulties. She has 4 children and a husband back home - 3 children are here with her (3 boys, ages 16, 14, 8) - she lives on campus in family student housing. She has had help to identify some assistance (scholarships, loans) but they are not very abundant for non-citizens. She currently needs grocery / gift cards to help her with utilities, food, help with tuition and books. If you are able to help, please take the cards to Hedges Insurance, 1035 Vermont, and Melissa or Linda will be glad to receive them. Bassinette or Baby Bed We have a single mom with a new born who is in need of a baby bed or bassinette. If you have one to donate, please contact Karina jones at the Douglas County Health Department at 843-0721. Gas Cards Even with prices going down, it is a heavy burden for some. We have 2 separate situations. One single mom with a son in the hospital in Topeka and another couple trying to get to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston so that the husband can start clinical trials for one last chance to fight his stage 4 colon cancer. If you can help with this request, please take or mail the cards to Hedges Insurance at 1035 Vermont, Lawrence, KS c/o Melissa. Dehumidifier Single mom with a 3 year old son. The house she lives in has a lot of mildew and it is effecting her son’s health. They are in desperate need of a dehumidifier. If you have one, please take it to Hedges Insurance at 1035 Vermont. Mom's First Apartment Single Mom & 4 Yr Old - First Apartment Single mom with 4 year old coming from a battered women’s shelter and moving into first apartment in Lawrence. They are excited but don’t have a lot to put in it (currently have a bed and set of dishes). See Requests for details. Mom needs Grocery Cards We have a newly single mom who is currently in the middle of a divorce and has not been able to establish the settlement yet. She is in need of grocery cards (preferably Wal-Mart). If you can help out, please send or deliver the cards to Hedges Insurance, 1035 Vermont, 66044 - attention Melissa Pack & Play / Playpen The folks at Douglas County Health Department are looking for: A small 3 or 4 drawer dresser and a Pack and Play Playpen. If you have one of these items, please contact Diane Pope at dpope@ldchealth.org or call 843-3060. Annual Member Events October Book Exchange and Chocolate Potluck March Clothing Exchange Are your Dues Due? We don't send a notice... we just ask that you kindly remember to give your $10 per year dues. Feel free to print and mail our Membership Renewal form and mail your dues .... or .... you could just bring your 10 bucks with you to the next 100 Good Women event! Thank You !!!! Our 2008 Holiday Family Drive was a great success. We filled every wish on our list! ...and then some! Incredible!
