One Hundred Good Women
Newsletter Summer 2005

Our Mission: One Hundred Good Women is a non-political and not-forprofit community of women and men embodying the spirit of altruism. We believe service creates strong community.

It’s summer again, and we’re all doing our best to keep cool—whether that means staying inside with ten fans and an air conditioner or swimming in cool, refreshing water. You can refresh your soul by reading all the things us 100 Good Women have done.
(Pat yourself on the back for jobs well done!)
The most heartfelt request came from outside of Lawrence. A single Mom with 3 teenage girls was dying of cancer. To add to the stress, the girls needed clothes, toiletries, and gift certificates. The response from 100 Good Women was, in a word, spectacular.

Because of our phone tree, someone from another organization learned of this family’s predicament and notified the president of The Topeka Community Foundation. They granted the family $500 for groceries, bills and life’s necessities. Our contact person told us that the Mom was overwhelmed by the generosity. She had been especially worried that the electricity would be turned off while she was using her breathing machine and the grant took that concern off her shoulders. Unfortunately, not long after that, the Mom died. The girls were able to have nice outfits for the funeral because of your kindness.

Other missions accomplished:
· A woman who had been sleeping on the floor received a twin bed. We hope she’s been having wonderful dreams.
· ECKAN got lots and lots of food and toiletries.
· A woman with special food needs got her food supplies.
· Apartments for several DCAP clients were furnished. This included outfitting a homeless person in his first home.
Mother Jones had a great article recently about a foundation that was arranging 1st homes for the homeless. It’s quite uplifting to read. Here is the URL: http://www.motherjones.com/news/feature/2005/01/01_405.html

· Work clothes were given to a woman who had been unemployed for awhile and was starting a new job.
· A wheelchair-bound woman who left her abusive husband was furnished an apartment.
· Furnished another apartment for a single Mom.
· Bottled water and portable food items were donated to a woman driving back and forth to Kansas City in order to take care of her dying sister.
· A woman was driven to Kansas City so that she could receive care for her cochlear implant.
· Our Clothing Exchange last March was extremely successful. Wardrobes were cleaned out and refurbished, and we brought in $387.11 for our Women Speak fund and over six carloads of clothing for the Ballard Center.

So, if life was perfect and we ruled the world, it would be a grand thing to have some storage space for furniture we acquire throughout the year…
Does anyone know of some space needing to be “fulfilled?”

We haven’t been the only busy bees!
Here is what other organizations have been doing:

If I Had a Hammer…
      Lawrence Habitat for Humanity
announced the opening of ReStore at 800 Comet
Lane. They accept donations of reusable building supplies to be sold to the public. All
proceeds go to building more Habitat Homes in Lawrence.

They also need volunteers to receive, clean and sort merchandise,
stock shelves, and help customers. Their phone number is 856-6920
or www.lawrencehabitat.org.

Acceptable items include:
- Electrical, plumbing & roofing supplies
- Lumber
- Vanities
- Doors
- Cabinets
- Tools
- Windows

Hmmmm… For those of us who have more projects than time, maybe those supplies from undone projects could be donated. What a relief to say goodbye to a project that will never get done!

CANS! CANS! CANS!
Our friend, the Can Lady, has started her own recycling effort to benefit our community. This may be the answer for the temporary shutting down of the other recycling center. Profits will go to a different charitable organization each month.
Take your aluminum cans to:
· The Can Cottage behind Immanuel Lutheran Church at 15th and Iowa.
· The Bargain Center at 12th and Haskell
· Call 862-9671 for a pick up.
Push our buttons!
ECKAN needs 100 scientific calculators for junior high and high school students. Do you have a lonely calculator needing a new home and more attention? We may have found just the place for it. Take it to the United Way offices at 2518 Ridge Ct.
Convergence 2005—“Paths and Structures”
October 17th-November 30th, 2005
“Life beats down and crushes the soul and art reminds you that you have one.” -Stella Adler
Convergence” is an international art event including work by 18 women artists, nine from Lawrence and nine from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. “Convergence” will include an art exhibition at the Lawrence Arts Center, “Paths and Structures,” a community-created installation, the “Labyrinth,” an artist installation, along with workshops, panel discussions, a lecture and additional events. As a sponsoring organization, One Hundred Good Women will host a Women’s Speak event on Wednesday, October 26th at the Lawrence Arts Center. Saralynn Reece Hardy, the new Director of Spencer Museum of Art Works will speak at 7pm. A reception will follow.
In addition, One Hundred Good Women will participate in creating a part of “Paths and Structures.” Put your creative hats on—we will need 3-7 volunteers to put this together. This event involves community members in creating a path that conceptually links Ottawa, Ontario, Canada to Lawrence, Kansas, USA. The floor of the KU Art and Design building will be divided into areas based on a street map of downtown Lawrence. Groups (of which One Hundred Good Women is one) are invited to delineate the path through their assigned “block,” using materials of their choice. Installation will be Sunday, October 16th through Friday, October 21st with an opening reception on Saturday, October 22nd.
If you are interested in creating our space, contact Jennie: 841-3453 or email her at Jennie@Sunflower.com.

Women Speak September 11th, 2005

The September Project is a grassroots effort through public libraries to foster civic events in all communities on September 11. The Lawrence Public Library will be hosting a series of panel discussions on:
* International perspectives of the US
* Information gathering
* Religion
* Civil rights/immigration
* Traditional and non-traditional community involvement
Does that last one sound familiar? Our own wonderful Jo Portillo will be participating in that panel. You rock, Jo!
We will be serving refreshments for the day so fire up the ovens and dig out the recipes! We will be asking for donations of baked goods.

What’s up with the Vagina Monologues?
We took a deep breath and plunged in this year to an exciting new level for the
Monologues. We had 2 performances and the first night was a dinner theater
performance. YEE HAW! The food was fabulous. I’m salivating thinking about it.
$2292 was raised for the Fairy Godmother Fund. The second night was a near sell-out
and resulted in $1138.11 for Women’s Transitional Care Services and $2276.11 for
GaDuGi SafeCenter (formerly RVSS).
Humor and the tragedy are both good delivery systems for making a point. Both
methods were issued in ways to touch the heart.

We are all encouraged to replenish local food pantries in August. This is a time when most food pantries are at their lowest levels. Along with the usual canned vegetables and fruits, the items that are especially needed include:
- Boxed dinners
- Canned tuna, salmon, chicken and meats
- Diapers and formula
- Toiletries

Mark Your Calendars!
On Sunday, October 9th, we will be holding our Fall Gathering/Book
Exchange and Chocolate potluck. It will be at 4:00pm, but the location is
yet to be determined.
Hope you’re all having lovely, relaxing summer, but if you’re feeling a bit bogged down in the all the things you have to do, remember this:
“Look at a day when you are supremely satisfied at the end. It's not a day
when you lounge around doing nothing; it’s when you had everything to
do, and you've done it.”

-Margaret Thatcher

If you know of anyone who needs help and you think that it might be right up our alley, please contact Jennie Washburn (jennie@sunflower.com) or any of the other board members.
