Current Requests

Want to help?
It’s tough out there for everyone.  We are having many requests for gift cards – gas and/or groceries.  If you are able to help, it will be even more appreciated.  Please take the cards to Hedges Insurance, 1035 Vermont, and Melissa or Linda will be glad to receive them.  Or please follow the specific instructions listed with the request.

Here are the stories:

Grocery / Gas Cars to get Mom through
Single Mom, is re-building her life in a variety of ways with help from, Bert Nash, etc. She recently had a job interview - but she has a late water bill and they will only hold it until the 12th. She has a bit of grocery and gas money that she's holding back, and if she had some relief in that area she could throw that money toward keeping the water on. It's a pretty dire situation due to the kids and the housing assistance. The bill is $209 and her helpers are hoping that her grocery fund will cover it. If a few grocery/gas cards could be donated, it would help her make it through November, and definitely see light at the end of the tunnel.

Grocery / Gas Cars to get Teacher through
This request is for one of our teachers who is in her first year and struggling as a single mom with three children and no other family support. She went to the food pantry and got a few things, but has nothing to go with it. She needs grocery cards big time and a gas card or two. Currently she is virtually out of food and has no funds until the next payday on the 20th.

Doctoral Student from Zimbabwe needs Grocery / Gift Cards
We have a doctoral student from Zimbabwe, trying to finish her degree, who is having significant financial difficulties. She has 4 children and a husband back home - 3 children are here with her (3 boys, ages 16, 14, 8) - she lives on campus in family student housing. She has had help to identify some assistance (scholarships, loans) but they are not very abundant for non-citizens. She currently needs grocery / gift cards to help her with utilities, food, help with tuition and books.

Bassinette or Baby Bed
We have a single mom with a new born who is in need of a baby bed or bassinette. If you have one to donate, please contact Karina jones at the Douglas County Health Department at 843-0721.

Gas Cards
Even with prices going down, it is a heavy burden for some. We have 2 separate situations. One single mom with a son in the hospital in Topeka and another couple trying to get to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston so that the husband can start clinical trials for one last chance to fight his stage 4 colon cancer. If you can help with this request, please take or mail the cards to Hedges Insurance, 1035 Vermont, 66044 - attention Melissa

Gas and Food Cards ... the sign of the times
Below are portions of 3 requests we have recently received.  As you can see from the requests, the economy is starting to take its toll on everyone and gas cards are needed. Please read each - and if you are able to help in any way, no matter how big or small, please do...

Friend who is type 1 diabetic, mother to 3 boys and is married. She is working two full-time jobs and her husband works one full-time job because he lost his other job due to daycare issues. I just came back from their house this morning as the paramedics had to come again and give her glucose. She wears a pump that is meant to control her blood sugar, but after she goes to sleep her blood sugar drops so low that it causes her to become unconscious. Her doctor says that her stress is the root of her erratic blood sugar levels. She told me today that yesterday they had to go to a food bank for some food. If there are any food or gas vouchers that could be gathered for this family that would be great. I asked my friend if she had applied for any assistance and they were told they make too much money.

Neighbor who has had a terrible accident at work requiring him to be at KU Med for the last month. His wife is struggling to make ends meet, especially with the cost of gas driving back and forth to KU Med. Is this a situation that 100 Good Women might be able to help out ? Maybe some gas cards?

Single mom of a 4 year old daughter.  I work and go to school in Ottawa.  We just moved here from out of state and because my child support is in court in that other state, I am not receiving any right now.  I am trying to make a better life for my daughter and saw your website.  Can you please help with gas cards so I can continue to go to school?

If you are able to donate a gas card and/or a grocery card, please bring them or mail them to Jennie @ Hedges Insurance, 1035 Vermont, 66044.

As always, thank you for all that you do. - One Hundred Good Women

Help Mom with New Baby Care
We received a call from Douglas County Aids Project about a young mother who has AIDS.  The mother is 19 years old, and just had a baby.  The mother is not well and we are looking for people to help care for the baby.  If you wish to volunteer to help with this, please contact Kelly Evans at kb4ku@yahoo.com or at 766-5827.  One funding for services is in place, Trinity In-Home Care will provide staff for the family - but that could take a while.

Single Mom needs Vac and Fencing
We have a single mom on disability that needs an electric sweeper or a vacuum. She is also looking for some chain link fence and a gate to finish off fencing her yard (there is fence along 2 sides). If you can help, contact jennie@sunflower.com or call 841-3453 or 841-0200.

CVS Pharmacy Gift Cards
We have a request from a young couple struggling to make ends meet. He has been battling stage 4 colon cancer for 3 years, is in and out of the hospital and/or bedridden most of the time. She works 2 jobs and makes just enough to pay the household bills each month (last month the furnace went out, which ate a big chunk of the money from the second job). She also knows that she won't be able to maintain the 2nd job for much longer as his health needs become more demanding. He gets disability and has health insurance through her employer and he does qualify now for Medicare so his hospital stay expenses will be better met but they average an additional $300 each month in other medical expenses. Because of the income they do have, they are no longer eligible for any assistance. This is a perfect example of people falling through the cracks. They are requesting gift certificates from CVS pharmacy to offset some of the additional expenses such as wound dressings and other expenses not covered by the insurance. If you are so inclined, please send or bring the cards to Jennie at Hedges Insurance, 1035 Vermont 66044. If you have more questions, email jennie@sunflower.com or call 841-0200.

Frig for Mom
We are looking for a working refrigerator, in good condition, for a single mom in our community. If you can help with this request, contact Lydia at ldiebolt@kvc.org or 785-331-3079 x6620.

Pads for Schools
A reminder that we are still collecting feminine hygiene products - pads - for the junior high schools. If you would like to donate items, please bring them to Hedges Insurance, 1035 Vermont during business hours, 841-0200.
